Our original mast was Sitka Spruce with a carbon core, as was the yard. The boom being made just of Sitka on account of its internal workings of the main outhaul.
However, we found that the shape of the sail was lost when it started to blow upward of 3. Basically the rig was so powerful it was bending the mast enough to show some bunching of sailcloth in the luff of the main. We have a very powerful 1:6 pully system on the tack downhaul which pulls it all down nicely but this was not enough.
We now have a full carbon mast in all the new boats. It's a thing of great beauty and will not bend even an inch allowing the sail to bend just as it was designed. The yard is also carbon for the same reasons of strength but also we feel it makes a difference not having a heavy length of wood high up on our rig.
